No one will “give” you a job. You have to earn one.

Summer is in full swing and we have been bombarded with phone calls and emails from teens who—want Teens4Hire.org to “GIVE” them a paying job.

This may sound silly to some of you. Unfortunately for others they are serious. For those of you in the later category, I hate to break this to you but Teens4Hire.org does NOT give out jobs. In fact, no one does!

You have to EARN a job.

You earn a job by first preparing yourself for employment. By 14 years of age you should know how to:

Read with understanding,
Communicate with good grammar verbally in English and in writing,
Do basic math accurately (add, subtract, multiply and divide),
Take and follow directions,
Get along with others.

Beyond that, you should have some sense of what you ‘can’ do as well as what you would ‘like’ to do.

Once you have some idea of what you can and would like to do, identify places in your immediate neighborhood where you’d want to work.

Be realistic. If you don’t have a car or public transportation, don’t consider a job that may require this. If the minimum age requirement is 18—don’t bother trying if you are younger. By the way, how do you find out what the minimum age is? Ask! Call them up or walk in the door and ask. It’s that simple.

Be creative. Think of all the places in your local area where you’d fit in. For example, if you like animals perhaps you could work at a pet store, zoo, grooming salon, animal shelter, or start a business walking dogs or cleaning up after them.

Employers want to hire people who can do the job they need getting done.

You have to dress in appropriate business attire. You have to complete an application correctly. You have to speak in your business voice when interviewing. You have to make eye contact with the interviewer. You have to share information about yourself to the interviewer that demonstrates you can do the job (or in some cases learn to do the job) BEFORE you can earn the job.

Once you land a job, and in return for your services, you get paid—either with money and/or experience.

Remember, no one will give you a job. You have to earn one.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA, A rise in business activity that typically peaks in the late spring and summer months signals an uptick in hiring may be on the horizon that would benefit the most prepared teens.

This would be a welcome improvement considering over the past 10 years, U.S. teen employment has fallen to record lows bolstered by fewer overall jobs and competition from adults and immigrants with greater work experience.

Renee Ward, founder of Teens4Hire.org says, “We’re getting about 12% more inquiries from new businesses over last year. They are primarily looking to hire self-motivated teens with behavioral skills that have prepared them for the workplace.”

So what types of businesses peak with a good source of openings that teens could fill;

1. Parks, recreational areas & campgrounds

2. Amusement/theme parks

3. Day & summer camps

4. Swimming pools

5. Marine and boating

6. Lawn & gardening care, golf courses

7. Travel-related retailers including airport concession outlets

8. Hotels, resorts, zoos, museums, aquariums and other tourist-related destinations

However, teens shouldn’t believe they can “click” their way into a job, says Ward.

She adds, “They’ll have to be assertive and go out to find one. If a young worker canvasses their neighborhood for companies and organizations of this nature, they WILL find openings.

For the price of a video game, teens can get ready for the workplace by signing up for Teens4Hire.org’s online Job Readiness and Certification program. With a completion certificate in hand, teens can prove to employers that they are ready, willing and prepared for the workplace giving them a distinct advantage over others.

In addition, Teens4Hire.org is developing a mobile application teens can download which pinpoints hiring companies in their local area.

Teens4Hire.org polls show that 80% of teens 14-19 want paying jobs. Teens crave paid work-based learning experiences such as internships, co-ops and apprenticeships that make education relevant and interesting and let them explore career options. But for pay, teens are willing to work as housekeepers and gardeners too. They need the income for necessities such as school supplies, transportation, phones, clothing, college savings and in many cases to help support their entire family.

Teens--Beware of “Modeling” & “Party Hostess” Job Scams

Too many teens are being lured into so-called modeling jobs which are just scams. They tell you, “You’ve Got the Look”, then give you a high-pressure sales pitch for modeling or acting classes, or for “screen tests” or “photo shoots” that can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Be suspicious if a company requires an up-front fee to serve as your agent.

Bogus model or talent scouts are just after your money—or worse.

Beware of bogus “party hostess” jobs. They may offer you money just to lure you into prostitution. For real!

The come on is innocent sounding like, “just come be a “hostess for a private party and model. Nobody is going to touch you and you’ll make big money.” But, once you get there ANYTHING can happen. Suggestive photos can be taken of you that end up in the adult sections of classified sites. You could be drugged, beaten and even kidnapped.

As enticing as the money may sound, DON’T DO IT!!!

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA., Teens seeking paying part-time and/or summer jobs will find the 2009 Stimulus Act provides $1.2 billion for youth activities, including the creation of one million summer jobs for youths. The bill also extends from age 21 to age 24 the age of eligibility for youth services to allow local programs to reach young adults who are unemployed and not in school, says Renée Ward, founder of www.Teens4Hire.org.

The federal government will dispense funds to the states and ultimately trickle down to cities and communities in the form of jobs. Due to economic uncertainties overall hiring has slowed and businesses are reluctant to hire minor teens. This infusion will help teens in areas hardest hit and with the greatest need. Others will still have to work to find work.

The retail industry—one of the largest employers of teens—reports that retail sales are down and inventory is being cut. This also means fewer jobs may be available.If openings do exist, teens are typically the last link in the hiring chain.

Businesses prefer to hire those with experience for paying jobs when times are tough.

Older teens 18-19, have more opportunities available to them. Minor teens will really have to work to find work in their local areas from employers willing to give them a chance.

Regardless of your age, if you want a paying job you must demonstrate that you...

Have the basic education required to do the job,
Are willing to work hard and learn new things,
Have a positive attitude,
Are reliable and
Understand the needs of the business.

Look for NOW HIRING signs wherever you go.

Employers might give teens more consideration for employment if they show up at their door. Employers want to hire people with a positive attitude and attitude is something a teen can control.

Best bets for finding employment are: city-run youth programs, amusement, theme and recreation parks, ice-cream, juice shops and grocery stores; libraries, museums and zoos; fast food and casual dining restaurants; child and elder care services; and offices needing clerical or customer service help.

4. Your first “written” impression is very important. Take your time and fill out the job application form neatly and completely.

5. An “overall” positive impression will determine if you land the job. During the interview relax, listen to the questions and answer the questions honestly, continue to use your business voice, look the interviewer in the eye, be polite and convince the interviewer that you can and will do the job above expectations.

U.S. Crackdown on Illegals Increases Holiday Job Prospects for Teens

The government crackdown on illegal immigration has created more job opportunities this holiday season for senior and teen U.S. citizens, says Renee Ward, founder of Teens4Hire.org.

“Laws that allow high profile raids, deportation and punish employers of illegal immigrants and a recent program that lets employers check if a person can work legally in the U.S., have brought teens back in favor with many employers that need to hire seasonal, temporary, and or part time workers,” Ward says.

U.S. born teens with a legal right to work are perfect candidates for holiday jobs that need to be filled. Teens need experience and a little extra money for their necessities.

The retail industry adds thousands of seasonal jobs between now and the end of the year. This includes mall stores, grocery stores, fast food and casual dining restaurants, photo studios, and specialty stores like pumpkin and tree lots. Stores need more people to stock and sell their products.

Other places to consider include packing and shipping companies, event planners, caterers, flower shops, cleaning services, amusement/theme parks, and charitable organizations like the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.

“Businesses of this nature can find a wealth of eager talent on our sites to fill their needs. We have over 2 million registered members looking for work,” says Ward.
